Women's Self-Help Groups in Andhra Pradesh-Participatory Poverty Alleviation in Action
by Joy Deshmukh-Ranadive in 2005
World Region: South Asia
This document studies the effectiveness of Self Help Groups (SHGs) as tools for poverty alleviation and empowerment. It finds that SHGs empower women but that when microcredit is the pivot around which the SHG is formed, its impact is limited. The author goes on to argue that because poverty is a complicated and multidimensional phenomenon, SHGs' effectivness depends on their ability to deliver services beyond finance such as education, health, housing and infrastructure interventions.
