Advancing urban value chain development to help millions of people work their way out of poverty
The Value Initiative
One billion people worldwide live in urban slums; yet at the same time, cities are hubs of entrepreneurship, innovation, and growth. A powerful strategy called Urban Value Chain Development (UVCD) harnesses the resources of today’s cities to develop vibrant local economies while enabling the poor to compete within them. By simultaneously increasing the competiveness of local industries and giving the poor access to higher value markets, this approach generates sustainable growth and reduces urban poverty.

The Value Initiative is a SEEP-led progam that supports Urban Value Chain Development projects worldwide in order to capture, develop and share knowledge generated by this approach. By creating and disseminating lessons learned from these projects, The Value Initiative seeks to improve and advance the UVCD strategy to help millions work their way out of poverty.
