Self-Regulation – What is the Optimal Role for Networks

Industry self-regulation is increasingly being seen as a viable alternative to government regulation or an interim solution as the policy reform process evolves and there is a need to fill the regulatory gap. However, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed before any conclusions can be reached as to the optimal role of associations in these evolving legal regulatory frameworks. This session will debate the inherent risks and challenges with association led self-regulation regimes, drawing on the experience of both microfinance associations and international bodies. The panel will be asked to explore how associations can work together with government regulators to ensure the goals of the responsible finance agenda are achieved.
