Training Provider:  Practical Action Consulting

Date: Monday, November 5

Description: Participatory Market Systems Development (PMSD) is Practical Action's approach to inclusive market development (a.k.a. M4P or VCD). PMSD is based on three basic principles: participation, systems thinking and facilitation. PMSD has been developed and improved in the last decade by Practical Action's teams in Latin America, Africa and South Asia.  All this experience is being synthesised and structured under the PMSD Roadmap: a ten-step platform designed to provide field practitioners with basic concepts and techniques to enable a broad range of private and public actors to make their market systems more inclusive, productive and efficient. The PMSD Roadmap plays a key role in Practical Action’s capacity building systems and processes.

The training will focus on the market map and how to use it to facilitate participatory market mapping workshops. Participatory market mapping is one  of the most important and useful processes in the PMSD cycle to analyse the structure and dynamics of market systems; to give marginalised actors a wider view of the markets and build their capacity to engage with other actors; and to build dialogue and trust that help market actors to collaborate around their own joint visions, objectives and action plans.

The training will also explain the features of the PMSD Roadmap and how to use it for self-learning and for training field teams and partners. It will also be a good opportunity to explore collaboration and synergies between the participants and Practical Action to organise training workshops and mentoring in the future.

Space is limited to 25 participants in each training, so register now.

No registration for the SEEP Conference is required to attend technical trainings.

Target Audience: Practitioners with experience in analysis and mapping of market systems or value chains, or who are interested in exploring synergies and collaboration with Practical Action around the delivery of PMSD training workshops and mentoring processes in their areas of operation.

Trainer: Ailsa Buckley

Ailsa Buckley is Practical Action Consulting’s East Africa Manager. Ailsa is a market development practitioner with more than 20 years’ experience in private sector development work in Africa. Her work directly relates to stimulating specific market systems to be competitive via facilitation of the private sector and strengthening of support markets.
