Participation and Exclusion in SFC groups in Pastoralist and Migrant Communities

Summary

The following report reflects the results of a qualitative study conducted in Mali in June 2011 to assess the levels of participation of pastoralist and migrant populations in the Saving for Change (SfC) microfinance program for women in Mali sponsored by Oxfam America, Freedom from humger and partners since 2005. Research for this study was conducted over a period of 3 weeks in a total of 14 sites in the project zones of Kéniéba in western Mali and Nioro de Sahel, Nara, and Diéma in northern Mali near the border of Mauritania. Building on prior research conducted on the SfC program by the Bureau of Applied Research in Anthropology (BARA) in 2008 and 2009, this study incorporated a variety of qualitative methods that included focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and direct observations of SfC group meetings.
