Brazil Network Strengthening Program - Summary of Results and Highlights Presented in São Paulo
On May 15, 2015, Citi hosted a luncheon in their São Paulo offices during the Citi Microentrepreneurship Awards Council Meetings. During this event, SEEP’s Executive Director Sharon D’Onofrio joined board members from program partners ABCRED and ABSCM to present highlights and results from the Brazil Network Strengthening Program. This three-year capacity building and knowledge exchange initiative is set to conclude in May 2015. Also in attendance were representatives from the IDB, Development Bank of Brazil, Ministry of Labor, IFC, Planet Finance, and SEBRAE.
ABCRED presented a self-regulation project which will continue with support from the Development Bank of Brazil. This project is supported by their first Code of Ethics, which was developed almost entirely virtually by regional representatives from its membership and recently approved by all members.
ABSCM discussed their work to create a Seal of Excellence to assess members' practices around governance, transparency, consumer protection and compliance with their social mission, as well the newly-launched FIDIC, a revolving loan fund that would allow ABSCM members to borrow at market rates and provide a revenue stream for the association.
Peer Exchange in Ecuador
From April 7 – 10, 2014, ABCRED visited RFR - Red Financiera Rural, Ecuador's microfinance association, to learn about their successful approach to product development and service delivery, which emphasizes meeting member needs and financial sustainability. In addition, RFR shared its experience leading self-regulation efforts in the sector and strengthening members to meet higher operating standards.
Peer Exchange in Mexico
Three of ABSCM’s directors, representing the regulated Brazilian microfinance sector, visited ProDesarrollo, the Mexican Network February 17-21, 2014. The motivation to get to know the microfinance industry in Mexico was the legal framework that exists for the Popular Finance Companies (SOFIPOs) and the prospect of growth in this sector. Mexican SOFIPOs are exhibiting growth while Brazilian SCMs (Credit Companies for Small and Micro Entrepreneurs) are declining as some operators exit the market. With this in mind, ABSCM traveled to Mexico to meet with government agencies, microfinance operators and visit. Read more in this blog posted by Alexandra Annes da Silva, who coordinated the exchange visit.
