Gathering feedback on the Universal Standards of Social Performance Management (USSPM)

A major undertaking of SPWG in 2011 involved its collaboration with SPTF to include the voices of the practitioners in the development of the new Universal Standards.  In June 2011 the SPTF released the draft Universal Standards for Social Performance Management (USSPM). The USSPM are management standards for any MFI with a double or triple bottom line and they were drafted over the course of 18 months using the input from a variety of industry stakeholders.

SPTF hosted a period of public comment prior to its annual meeting and then revised the draft standards following the annual meeting based on all the feedback received. The SPTF then specifically reached out to SPWG and asked SEEP to assist the associations in contacting their member MFIs in order to get the practitioners’ view and feedback on the language and subject matter in the draft standards. In the last quarter of 2011, each region facilitated the collection of feedback from its member MFIs on the USSPM.  The feedback was consolidated at the regional level and then sent to the SPTF, who used it to further revise the standards in December 2011.

Gathering feedback on the essential practices of the USSPM

After the revision of the standards at the end of 2011, the SPTF facilitated a series of four thematic working groups during the first quarter of 2012.  These working groups were organized around the sections of the Universal Standards and gathered feedback on the essential and additional good practices associated with each of the standards.  SPWG participated in this effort as well, gathering the practitioner perspective from the regions and channeling that feedback to SPTF.  In May, SPTF hosted a period of public comment on the essential practices associated with each standard, before releasing the final version of the USSPM at its annual meeting in Jordan. Once again, the SPWG associations reached out to their member MFIs to gather comments and feedback on the best practices for each standard, and the results of that outreach are presented in the table below.
