Gender issues pose a complex set of challenges for microenterprise development. Regional laws and social norms can create a wide range of obstacles, from heavy household workloads to unequal control over land or assets, which hinder women's involvement in microenterprise. To address the diversity of gender issues in microenterprise development, SEEP created the Gender Working Group, which is comprised of smaller regional groups that identify common challenges and solutions for their region.
Currently, the Gender Working Group is focusing on Latin America and the Middle East/North Africa to produce one learning product for each region. Regional groups will gather at a global level twice a year to share their findings and progress and to mobilize commitment from members in other regions.
