Community Youth Mapping
FHI 360 experts created the Community Youth Mapping methodology — an innovative strategy that empowers and trains youth to map existing and potential opportunities for community involvement and activities for themselves, children and families. Based on youth needs or program objectives, young people map: Services (health services, employment assistance, counseling Infrastructure (art and music venues, housing) Activities (recreation, drama and family-related venues) Perceptions (adult attitudes toward youth, peace and tolerance). The mapping research can lead to better development: improved youth-tailored program designs, advocacy efforts for policy change and increased access to youth services. Community YouthMappingtm teaches youth new skills, such as how to collect, analyze, report, and disseminate information about community resources, and offers an opportunity to use these skills in the employment marketplace. Through the mapping process, youth learn how to communicate effectively with community and government leaders and are seen as partners and leaders in development and a positive force for change in their communities.
