Cash for Care? Researching the links between social protection and children's care

Summary

Strive Case study presentation from the Keeping Children and Families together through Economic Strengthening symposium held on March 6th in Washington DC.  This case study presentation shares research carried out collaboratively by the IDS Centre for Social Protection and Family for Every Child. The research presents findings from evaluations of Rwanda’s Vision Umerenge Programme (VUP), Ghana’s Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) and South Africa’s Child Support Grant. Findings show that there is a positive impact of social protection on prevention of family separation. It also shows how access was extended to kinship carers making the program inclusive and far reaching. It also shows how child care can be integrated into public works programs. It briefly discusses the potential danger of commodification of children.
