Case Study:Creating Employment through Tourism in Nicaragua
by Lendell Foan, Kim Jessen in 2008
The SEEP Network’s Ecotourism PLP1 examined strategies to promote sustainable job creation and increased incomes for small enterprises working both directly and indirectly in the growing ecotourism industries in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. SEEP defined enterprises working directly in the industry as those who cite tourism as their main industry and offer services or products directly to tourists, such as accommodations, guided tours, and cultural performances. The emphasis of this PLP is on small enterprises as the vehicle for increased employment, since globally the tourism industry is dominated by small enterprises.
