Implementing a Code of Conduct in Rwandan Microfinance

In 2013, microfinance institutions in Rwanda gathered for their 6th General Assembly under their umbrella association AMIR. They adopted a set of rules defining a Code of Conduct (CoC) for carrying out microfinance business in Rwanda.

The CoC will support the promotion of Client Protection Principles in the country, and it includes the principles promoted by the Smart Campaign. Ultimately, it provides a guide to the governance of microfinance institutions in Rwanda.

In 2014, AMIR, in partnership with The SEEP Network, carried out a baseline assessment as to the progress its members in implementing the CoC. According to the baseline survey report, the CoC was widely disseminated: 90% of Rwandan MFIs have access to the CoC and are meant to be implementing it. Mr. Peter Rwema, Director of Programs at AMIR, speaks more about the implementation of this Code of Conduct in Rwanda in a video interview:
