Training Provider: Freedom From Hunger

Date: Monday, November 5

Description: The Universal Social Performance Standards, which are management standards relevant to all microfinance institutions pursuing a double bottom line, outline the essential practices organizations must have in order to achieve strong social performance management. This training will present a methodology called Sextant, as adapted by Freedom from Hunger, for application with the new social performance standards. Sextant is a capacity-building process for assessing and building the social performance management capabilities of an organization. It goes beyond a simple yes/no compliance check to look at the degree to which staff have the knowledge and motivation to achieve the standards as well as the extent to which the work environment supports or hinders the standards.

The tool uses individual scoring combined with facilitated discussion to help organizations assess their current strengths in social performance management and evaluate opportunities for growth and change. Because it includes a cross-section of levels and areas within the organization, the tool can also help organizations identify differences in perception and awareness throughout the organization that are critical for developing a more effective communication strategy.

Sextant uses a “begin with a win” approach, which means that throughout the assessment process organizations are encouraged to celebrate their strengths in social performance and look for areas of “leveraged change”, where early successes can build support for more challenging capacity-building activities. This training is a "training of facilitators" which will prepare potential technical assistance providers or networks with the facilitation tools to assist an MFI in an organizational self-assessment of the social performance standards.
Space is limited to 25 participants in each training, so register now.

Target Audience: Consultants, technical assistance providers, networks that desire to facilitate discussions with MFIs regarding achievement of the Social Performance Standards in their organizations.

Trainer: Bobbi Gray
Bobbi Gray, Research and Evaluation Specialist, joined Freedom from Hunger in 2004.  She leads research and evaluation efforts for Freedom from Hunger and works closely with our partners to determine solutions for assessing and measuring the impacts of Credit with Education and other program interventions, including feedback of this information to stakeholders for decision-making.  She is also specifically looking at how to help partners develop robust social performance management systems whereby organizations put their social mission into practice.  Ms. Gray helps oversee the ongoing project to develop, test and document the food-security scaling for use by our partner organizations to assess poverty levels of their clients and changes in poverty over time.  She is also the Co-Facilitator of the Health and Microenterprise Development (HAMED) working group at the Small Enterprise Education and Promotion Network (SEEP).
