Training Provider: The Smart Campaign
Date: Monday, November 4
Description: The Smart Campaign will be conducting a training for technical assistance providers on how to work with financial services providers to enhance their client protection practices. The participants should review the Client Protection Principles and the Getting Started Questionnaire prior to attending this training. In this training, T.A. providers will practice the creation of a proposal to improve the client complaint system of a sample institution, known as a "client protection upgrading" proposal. The participants of this training will also learn about the Smart Campaign's client protection tools, which are meant for an institution to use after evaluating how it applies the Client Protection Principles in its business.

Target Audience: Existing TA providers who are interested in incorporating client protection into their ongoing TA.
Lead Trainer: Nadia Van de WalleMs. van de Walle is responsible for promoting client protection, pricing transparency, and other Center for Financial Inclusion Smart Campaign initiatives in Africa. Based in Washington, DC, she manages all partnerships with African institutions and networks, conducts Africa based research, and coordinates African based trainings and assessments. Additionally, she writes for the Center’s blog, is responsible for writing and editing francophone reports and material, and monitors and analyzes financial and banking sector development trends and strategies in Africa. Prior to joining the Smart Campaign team, she interned with Millennium Challenge Corporation in Tanzania and at the Private Capital Group for Africa in Washington, DC. Additionally, she previously worked for The Urban Institute as International Project Coordinator and for Kobre & Kim LLP as an analyst. She speaks English and French fluently.
Ms. van de Walle holds BAs in Political Science and French from the University of Pennsylvania and a Masters from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies.
Co-Trainer: Isabelle Barrès
Ms. Barrès leads the Smart Campaign’s global efforts to keep clients first in microfinance by imbedding core Principles of Client Protection into all aspects of microfinance operations. She comes to the Smart Campaign with 16 years experience in microfinance and the formal banking sector. Ms. Barrès managed Kiva’s microfinance operations and developed its global strategy to maximize social impact. She helped to create The MIX in 2002, and led its strategic initiatives until 2007. Ms. Barrès has been a key contributor to best practice publications on standards and financial performance monitoring, and is a founding member of Women Advancing Microfinance, the only organization for female professionals in microfinance. She is fluent in English, French and Spanish.
