Work Plan 2012

In 2012, SPWG Africa decided to focus on two areas: building awareness on social performance management among members and pilot testing implementation of the Universal Standards for Social Performance Management (USSPM) in several MFIs.

Social performance management is still a relatively new topic for MFIs in Africa. Many have heard the term before but do not know precisely what it is or why it is important. Awareness on the topic is growing however, at least in part due to the work of SPWG Africa and their decision to promote SPM in their region. Building awareness on what social performance is, its relevance to Africa MFIs, and how to promote better practice in this area  was a focus for the group last year and will continue to be one this year as well.

The USSPM are management standards for any MFI with a double or triple bottom line. The standards and their associated essential practice will be released at the Social Performance Task Force in June in Jordan. Afterwards, SPWG Africa plans to select MFIs for pilot projects that will allow them to improve their practices and meet more of the standards.

The main activities for 2012 can be found below:

  • SPM Awareness-Building and Promotion
    • Organize 5 one-day awareness building workshops in Cameroon, Niger, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Madagascar (March – December 2012)
    • Organize two webinars on SPM for associations and MFIs (April 2012)
    • Support the organization of the First African SPM Conference in Kampala, Uganda (September 2012)
    • Encourage associations and their member MFIs to report social indicators to MIX
  • Pilot Universal Standards of Social Performance Management (USSPM)
    • Hire consultants to pilot test implementation of the USSPM in several MFIs (July – December 2012)
  • Universal Standards of Social Performance Management (USSPM)
    • Collect feedback on the essential practices for the USSPM (January – April 2012)
