A New Gender Agenda for Microfinance?

This article highlights some of the unintended consequences of microfinance's empowerment agenda, including increased workplads for women, the withdrawal of male contributions to household expenditures, and increased domestic violence. It suggests mitigation strategies, especially the need for an explicit gender approach in program design and an understanding on the part of MFIs about the complex gender dynamics of the populations they seek to serve
