Financing Opportunities to Diversify Central American Energy Markets

Apr 6, 2017 (Thu), 10:00am-11:00am (US EDT)

 Convert time zone >>

Background

Commercial lending opportunities for clean energy in Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala are estimated at US$ 686 million per year, according to CEADIR market assessments. Favorable market segments include electric power generation from renewable sources and energy efficiency for industrial and commercial users in grid-connected areas, as well as renewable energy for residential consumers without access to the grid. To date, local commercial banks have had limited participation in financing clean energy, but they begin expanding clean energy financing by developing new financial products, targeting their existing clients first and gradually expanding outreach to new clients.

Please join the CEADIR Discussion Series on April 6 for “Financing Opportunities to Diversify Central American Energy Markets.” This webinar-only event features speakers from USAID’s Development Credit Authority (DCA) and CEADIR:

  • Walter Jokisch, the Regional Coordinator for CEADIR’s clean energy support in Central America, will summarize market assessments for renewable energy and energy efficiency lending in Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. He will highlight common challenges and opportunities for commercial banks, including partnering with other sources of investment capital and derisking mechanisms.
  • Bernai Velarde, CEADIR’s International Banking Sector and Finance Expert for Central America, will discuss the issues that need to be addressed to increase equity investment in clean energy in the region and how USAID can leverage its resources to scale up its impact.
  • Felizia Bacall, Investment Officer for the USAID Development Credit Authority, will describe opportunities for commercial banks to receive partial loan guarantees from USAID. She will also discuss regional commercial bank perspectives on clean energy in light of their typical investment portfolios.
  • Santiago Enriquez, Activity Manager for CEADIR’s clean energy support in Central America, will moderate the discussion.

This webinar-only event will be available through Adobe Connect from 10-11am EDT on Thursday, April 6, 2017. Following the presentations, participants will have the opportunity to submit questions to the panel.
